Salt Spring Island is just over 194 sq. kilometers in size and according to the 2016 Census, has a population of 10,640 people. 60% of the population ranges in age between 15 and 64, and 30% are age 65 and over. The census shows 4885 private dwellings, with 80% of those being single family detached homes. 40% of homes are occupied by 2 people, and 33% by only one person. The remaining 27% of homes have 3 or more occupants. Nearly 100% of people polled in the census speak English as their first language, although 27% have knowledge of French or another second language.
