NEW UPDATE from Northridge Excavating – June 15th, 2025

Fulford-Ganges Road Construction Update: JUNE 11th, 2025

Progress on the Fulford-Ganges Road construction project is well underway, with approximately 65% of the work now complete. The pulverization phase is finished, with the exception of a short 200-metre section of the southbound lane near Embe Bakery.

This week, crews will be focused on the following tasks:

  • Removing pulverized materials and preparing the road base for asphalt paving
  • Advancing work on the concrete block wall at Bittencourt Road
  • Ongoing roadway maintenance
  • Sub-excavating soft areas, where an old wood stave pipe was recently uncovered and will be addressed through backfilling, compaction, and grading
  • Continuing drainage improvements at the Alders Avenue outfall

Grading and road preparation for the next paving section—approximately 0.5 km—is expected to begin the week of June 23.

Fulford-Ganges Road Construction Update – May 28th, 2025

What’s Been Done Since May 14:

There’s been good progress on the road work over the past couple of weeks. Crews have:

  • Graded the pulverized road from about 100 metres south of Drake Road to Alders Avenue
  • Laid 25mm well-graded base gravel
  • Built up embankments
  • Widened the road to prepare for the new shoulders

Traffic Delays – Getting Better:

After some long waits earlier this month, traffic flow has started to improve. Many local businesses have told us things feel a bit smoother—and the contractor and Ministry are working hard to keep things moving.

They’ve added extra Traffic Control Personnel (TCPs), improved coordination between flaggers, and are closely monitoring queue lengths. While wait times aren’t gone entirely, there’s been a real effort to reduce them, and to make sure emergency vehicles, school buses, and transit can get through as smoothly as possible.

What’s Coming Up Next:

Paving is scheduled for this Thursday and Friday (May 29–30) on the section south of Drake Road to Alders Avenue. After that, crews will start work on the next stretch between Alders Avenue and Beddis Road.

They’ll also be finishing up the concrete block wall for the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation’s housing project at Bittencourt Road.

Heads-Up for Drivers:

The Digital Message Signs along the route will be updated to let drivers know about upcoming paving work and expected delays. If you can, plan a bit of extra time for your trip.

Thanks again to everyone for your patience—this work is moving us closer to a safer, more accessible road for all users.

The Salt Spring Chamber will keep sharing updates in our newsletter, on our website and on the Salt Spring Exchange as we receive them.

Community Update: Fulford-Ganges Road Construction Progress

The Fulford-Ganges Road improvement project is now over 56% complete. Upcoming work will involve pulverization, graveling, and paving. The contractor is aiming to complete the project by July 1st.

The project includes adding paved shoulders on both sides of the road to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The northbound (downhill) direction will feature 1.2-metre-wide shoulders, while the southbound (uphill) direction will have 1.8-metre-wide shoulders. There are no sidewalks included in this project.

To keep road users informed, four Dynamic Message Signs have been installed along the route:

  • Near the Fulford-Ganges ferry terminal
  • 300 metres south of Cranberry Road
  • At the intersection of Fulford-Ganges Road and Vesuvius Road (by the maintenance contractor’s yard)
  • Approximately 1 kilometre from the north end of the project

Images or renders of the finished project are not available. However, pavement marking drawings and schematics will be shared to provide a visual representation of the planned improvements.

The Salt Spring Chamber of Commerce is now receiving regular updates directly from the contractor to help keep the community informed. This information will be posted in the Chamber newsletter and website, as well as on the Salt Spring Exchange.
