On October 17, Salt Spring voters will be electing:

  • 1 CRD Electoral Area director
  • 2 Islands Trust trustees
  • 3 SD64 School Board trustees.
  • 4 Local Community Commission commissioners

APPLY TO VOTE BY MAIL:

Mail voting is available to all eligible resident and non-resident property electors. Applications for a mail ballot must be received no later than September 30.

Your completed ballot must reach one of the designated CRD addresses before 4pm on Friday, October 16. Mail ballots cannot be received at advance or general voting locations.

Who Can Vote

To be eligible to be a resident elector (you live in the community), you must be: 18 or older on voting day, a Canadian citizen, a BC resident for at least six months before registration or voting, a resident of the Salt Spring electoral area, and not be disqualified from voting. There is no 30-day local residency requirement for resident electors, so you can be a newcomer to SSI as long as you meet the other requirements. This applies to everyone (renters included) living on Salt Spring.

Non-resident property electors (you own property in the community but live elsewhere in BC) have additional requirements, including 30 days of registered property ownership and any required written co-owner consent. Register to vote on Voting Day:

If you are eligible and have not yet registered to vote, you can register to vote on Voting Day October 17 by bringing two pieces of identification, one of which must include your signature.


ELECTOR IDENTITY DOCUMENTS:

The following are valid identity documents for proving elector identity:

  • BC driver’s licence
  • BC ID card issued by the Motor Vehicle Branch
  • BC Services Card
  • Request for Continued Assistance form SDES8
  • Social Insurance Card (Canada)
  • Citizenship Card (Canada)
  • Citizenship or membership cards issued by a BC First Nation governing body
  • Métis Nation BC citizenship card/BC Métis Federation membership card
  • Real property tax notice
  • Credit card or debit card issued by a savings institution
  • Utility bill

Know who you're voting for,

and what the job actually is

Not sure what a Local Community Commissioner does, or how they differ from the Electoral Area Director? This CRD presentation explains both roles, the services they oversee, and the key voting dates for October 17, so you can vote with confidence

  • Learn what each office does. The Director sits on the 24-member CRD Board and votes on regional budgets and bylaws. Commissioners oversee local services and advise the Board. Knowing the difference helps you judge whether a candidate's promises fall within their authority.
  • See which local services are at stake. The Commission handles transit, parks and recreation, the pool, economic development, street lighting, wastewater disposal, and grants-in-aid. These are the day-to-day services that shape life and business on the island.
  • Understand the commitment. Meeting schedules, workload, travel to Victoria, and pay are all spelled out. The Director role is $49,065 a year and the Commissioner role is $15,175. That helps you ask candidates realistic questions about their availability.
  • Know how campaigns are regulated. The document lists spending and contribution limits and disclosure requirements, so you know what to expect from campaigns and what to watch for.
  • Have the voting details in one place. Advance voting is Wednesday, October 7 and Wednesday, October 14, 8 am to 8 pm. General voting day is Saturday, October 17, 8 am to 8 pm. The document also lists the voting locations and the four races on your ballot: EA Director, LCC Commissioner, Islands Trust, and School District #64.
